Author Triumphant: inspiration & spark

This post is Part 5 of a series to augment the Author's Manifesto available for free download. Start with Part 1 here.

This and other inspirations of mine are gathered in the Spark Directory for you to explore.

Find more map-making content in my Cartography Directory.

In Part 1 of this series, I began writing my first stories. And though I'd already decided to re-draft and edit my first novel, maintaining my devotion proved difficult as life twisted and turned. Dissatisfied with my day job and life in general, I found it hard to leverage my free time into writing time.

Once again, I fell out of the habit of writing. Then I discovered Tara Swiger, who worked to help creative business owners find direction, motivation, and organization. Her idea of making a map to achieve business goals resonated with me, but since I wasn't a business owner, we passed like ships in the night. A few months later, I'd turned my knitting and rug-making hobbies into an Etsy storefront, and I joined the ranks of Tara's Starship group under the guise of a craft-business startup.

Amidst the clarity and support of this group, I decided that if I launched a creative business, it had to be based on writing stories. The Starship group supported this change of direction, and over the next year I poured myself into my creative work. I documented my writing process, honed it through trial and error, and established a weekly writing schedule that helped me meet my writing goals.

Check out this Author's Manifesto for more of my inspirations!

I also revisited some fantasy cartography tutorials I'd encountered during my gaming days, and I remade my map of the Known World. I loved the map-making process so much, I decided to make a map for each of the novel's four parts. With each map, my delight grew, and I adopted map-making as part of my writing process. A map for each of the book's fourteen chapters naturally followed.

By the time I'd finished the manuscript, the self-publishing arena had advanced far from the stigmatized vanity press from which it started. Quality works were being self-published, grabbing the public's attention, and landing post-publication deals. Rather than tacking another year onto my release date, I published the finished manuscript and maps in a single frenzied week. Then I slammed headlong into a long-avoided setback: marketing.

While I figured out how best to reach my audience of fantasy fans, gamers, and lovers of tropes the world over, I began work on the second book in my series. The Tales of the Known World saga spans centuries, continents, and at least eight impending novels, all of which cannot be written fast enough.

Tips for Writing Fiction: a workshop directory

This post is part of a series to augment the Tips for Writing Fiction available for free download.

This and other writing workshops are gathered in my Workshops Directory for you to explore.

Find more content navigation in my Resource Directory.

Hello, there! Thanks for your interest in my writing tips. My name is D.N.Frost, and I'm a fantasy author, editor, and linguist. Through the course of planning, writing, and publishing my Tales of the Known World saga, I learned a lot about the work it takes to produce a great manuscript.

So why do many good storytellers never become authors? I discovered that writing is really a composite of two distinct skills: adept storycraft, and prowess as a wordsmith. To take your writing to the next level, please enjoy this collection of short tips and workshops from TotKW Books.

Download your workshop guide Tips for Writing Fiction here.

These are tips for improving specific aspects of your writing. All too often, writers approach their writing as a single dragon to be harnessed, but you can hone each skill in your repertoire individually. By improving one skill at a time, you take actionable steps toward a better manuscript, and you improve your writing overall.

This resource directory also links to a number of writing workshops and longer blog posts, so you can delve deep into your favorite writing tips. I'm proud to offer you this compilation of workshops and insights into great writing, and I hope you use this resource to enhance your own craft.

T'Chak of Sheridan's World: a map commission

This post is Part 1 of a series to augment the Fictional Cartography by D.N.Frost available for free download.

This and other map commissions are gathered in my Portfolio Directory for you to explore.

This post is also Part 3 of a series about Stephen Everett. Start with Part 1 here.

I first connected with Steve in Part 1 of this guest series, when we collaborated on his map of Babylon and Corinth for Sheridan's World. After finishing a second map for Minbari of Sheridan's World, Steve mentioned having a southern continent to work on next.

We chatted about it some, and he sent me a sketch and some data about the southern continent, tentatively dubbed TeChak. Unfortunately, he sent me the sketch right as I was planning to move to a new city, so we had to shelve the project for a few weeks until I could devote the attention his map deserved.

Check out this Fictional Cartography by D.N.Frost for more maps!

I finished moving and contacted Steve, ready to begin our third collaboration.

But it turned out he was too busy at the time to start on the project, so we shelved it again.

Steve let me know a basic timeframe in which he thought he'd be ready, and I blocked it out on my calendar to make sure I'd be ready too.

In the meantime, I started work on his initial render using the data he'd already sent me, and I sent it off for him to percolate on in the interim.

Here's what he had to say about the finished map:

Exceptional job, IT LOOKS AWESOME!

Thanks for all the great work. Everything worked out fantastic.

You had to figure out different techniques to get the result we both wanted.

It makes the continents take on a life of their own.

It looks awesome, you are incredible. I love your place name Bay of Seals.

Great job on the maps. I need to flip a coin as to which I like more.

Here's $10,000 imaginary dollars (CDN).

Such a work of art, time, and patience. Perfection!

Portent II of Broken: a riddle in rhyme

Portent II of Broken: by day and verdict cold without www.DNFrost.com/prophesy #TotKW A riddle in rhyme by D.N.Frost @DNFrost13 Part of a series.
In the novel Broken, there are 24 portents fortelling the events of the unfolding saga.

Start with Portent I here.

These and other riddles in rhyme are gathered in the Portents Directory for you to explore.

Enjoy!

The bitter crown rejects in spite
Unwitting ward of legend spent
And turns to last surviving knight
Yet novice youth cannot relent
Nor cast his fate from timeless light
Driven to reign and reinvent
The self behind the fight

Awash in blood of early sin
Against a greatness long extolled
The mystics claim he cannot win
Thus caught in doubt's repentant hold
The dragon mage with silent kin
Broken by day and verdict cold
Without begins within

While mentor power gained denies
His land and life cannot protect
Yet master frees by own demise
Where hope and hatred intersect
Unleashed with death before his eyes
Chaos and blood as men defect
Dispatches low disguise.

Collapse into Direction: inspiration & spark

This post is Part 4 of a series to augment the Author's Manifesto available for free download. Start with Part 1 here.

This and other inspirations of mine are gathered in the Spark Directory for you to explore.

Find my published stories and guides in the Books Directory.

In Part 1 of this series, I began writing my first stories. After joining some writing collaborations to share my tales with others, I surrendered creative autonomy to my writing partner, and unhappiness welled up in me. Storytelling, my joy and passion, now hinged on her continued interest.

When she felt ill or restless, our writing suffered. I felt adrift in creative futility with no shoreline. Remembering the quiet desperation of my ignored solo stories, I failed to work on them to fill the void. Instead, I obsessively tweaked the code for our online game, maxed out my sphere grid in Final Fantasy X, took up knitting and audiobooks - anything to burn time. I was sick, depressed, and overwhelmed by the pressures of my final college semesters.

Then my roommate and my mother staged an intervention, and my vision began to clear. The resentment from my pent-up creativity fizzled out. I realized storytelling came from within me, and I couldn't rely on anyone else for fulfillment. I saw that my gaming obsession was an addiction preventing me from writing my own stories. Squeaking through graduation, I returned home to figure myself out, and I began work on my Known World story again.

Check out this Author's Manifesto for more of my inspirations!

It was dreadful. As a college graduate, I read back through my high-school transcripts and cringed. There was no salvaging the ridiculous storyline; no amount of polish would eradicate the childish tone of those old drafts. But determined to close out the darkest chapter of my life, I hatched an ambitious plan. I would rewrite the entire story from start to finish and edit my new draft up to snuff.

When I wasn't at work, I drafted the first manuscript for my Tales of the Known World saga. My passion for writing flowered again, and I resigned myself to the fact that stories are best shared when finished. Determined to become my own cheerleader, I vowed to never again rely on someone else for creative fulfillment. My dreams of acclaim had to await the distant day when the book would be finished.

The Once and Future Nerd: an inspired collaboration

This post is Part 2 of a series to augment the Guest Resources available for free download. Start with Part 1 here.

This and other guest-inspired content is gathered in my Guest Directory for you to explore.

Find my personal inspirations in the Spark Directory.

In Part 1 of this series, I started on a shiny new map for The Once and Future Nerd, a phenomenal podcast by writers Zachary Glass and Christian Madera.

Their fantasy story is professionally recorded by voice actors, and it has its own original score. You can read my five-star review of their podcast here.

The podcast itself is masterful, and it plays around with fantasy tropes with the same respectful irreverence that I do in my Tales of the Known World saga. If you're looking for a great story that you'll never escape, The Once and Future Nerd is for you.

Check out these Guest Resources for more inspirational content!

Their podcast story is between books for now, but Book 2 is currently in production. In addition to the free podcast archives where you can listen to the whole story, you can now purchase Book 1 of TOAFN as a professionally-made audiobook. The audiobook comes on a USB drive shaped like an old cassette tape, and the case art includes the map I made for them!

Because I sent you, you can use the discount code iorden for a limited time. I'm not sure when the discount expires, so be sure to snag your copy today! In honor of the release, I offered fellow TOAFN fans a special discount on my own work. For a limited time, you could also get 20% off the full ebook of Awakening.

They announced the map and audiobook in a bonus episode. The majority of the episode is a cool bonus interview between Ian Harkins, the narrator of the TOAFN story, and podcast writer Christian Madera. They take a look back at the shenanigans of Book 1, and podcast co-writer Zachary Glass interrupts the interview with a few show announcements, including a nice piece about yours truly.

Wearied by blood and thunder
Primed by the fall and rise
Tortured by restless wonder
And taught by the long unwise

The gateway doffs her cloak of night
For master's harrowed aid
Awash in dreams of bloodied sight
And driven towards the bloody fight
Abandons the guarded shade

Broken by land asunder
Sundered by love astray
Rousing the fallen plunder
The gate makes for timeless way.

Part 1 of Broken is titled "By Land", and this prophesy opens Part 1 (which you can read free here). It foretells Larin's adventure through the course of Book 2.

The prophesy's 13 lines mirror the book's 13 scenes involving Larin, and I love the poem's stumbling, broken meter. Do you know who the gateway is now?

Self-Awareness is the Key to Great Writing: inspiration & spark

This post is part of a series to augment the Author's Manifesto available for free download.

This and other inspirations of mine are gathered in the Spark Directory for you to explore.

Find more consciousness content in my Cosmic Directory.

Think about great writing for a moment. It's a miracle, really. Emotions and images arise within readers, all from squiggles on the page. There is so much artistry that goes into crafting those high-quality squiggles. Beyond the required wordsmith skills, there is a profound amount of humanity behind any story that comes to life.

How else but self-awareness do you paint a character in his struggles, with his pain, striving to overcome and triumph? In order to write such a thing, you must be able to step outside of your own pain and see how it has shaped you.

All these characters of mine–they all are some facet of me, and I in turn am all of them. Yet they are so disparate, so potent, so visceral. How can one person see through the eyes of so many people? To be a great writer, you must become the eye that sees itself seeing. Such self-awareness is crucial to the writing process.

Check out this Author's Manifesto for more of my inspirations!

Everyone's experience is unique, and yet great writing presents characters at various stages along different paths. How can a person reflect on one life's experience and discover a thousand lifetimes of development? Self-awareness.

The more self-aware you become, the more insight and nuance you can infuse into your characters. The more you live as your true self, the more relatable and profound your characters feel. Your stories gain depth and meaning beyond intention.

Each character becomes a vassal of truth for readers like him. Characters drive themselves downward until they revolt against their patterns and uplift into wisdom. Great writing lives out the lessons that life teaches us–and only the self-aware writer can capture those lessons on paper.

At every moment, every person is in constant flux between dissatisfaction and breakthrough, breakthrough and contentment, contentment and dissatisfaction. With my Tales of the Known World saga, it is my hope that readers become more self-aware through the adventures they have conquered.

The Realms of Iorden: a map commission

This post is Part 1 of a series to augment the Fictional Cartography by D.N.Frost available for free download.

This and other map commissions are gathered in my Portfolio Directory for you to explore.

This post is also Part 1 of a series about The Once and Future Nerd.

When I first stumbled across The Once and Future Nerd fantasy podcast, I was blown away by the professional voice acting and tongue-in-cheek narration. I found the TOAFN storyline rife with the same irreverent examination of fantasy tropes that I love exploring in my own work. You can read my five-star review of their podcast here.

While poking around the TOAFN website for bonus content, I started imagining all the different places our heroes visited in the first season. Then it hit me! For all the detailed worldbuilding the creators had crafted, there needed to be a map to share their world with fans.

Check out this Fictional Cartography by D.N.Frost for more maps!

Fortunately, making maps is kind of my thing, so I contacted the podcast writers Zach Glass and Christian Madera with my offer.

In exchange, I hoped they'd let me invite other TOAFN fans to try out my fantasy saga while we wait for their new season.

As it turned out, they already had a map, but it wasn't quite up to their exacting standards.

So despite being busy with the next season of their podcast, Zach and Christian responded with excitement and made time to collaborate with me.

Here's what they had to say about the finished map:

The Realms of Iorden, a map commission by D.N.Frost for The Once and Future Nerd www.DNFrost.com/portfolio Part 1 of a series.
Through the entire process, D.N. was wonderful to work with!

We entered this process having absolutely no map-making experience. D.N. is extremely patient, and willing to explain her map-making process in a way that makes sense to lay-folk like us.

If we requested a feature that was in reality a poor choice (or, on occasion, actually impossible), D.N. never shot down our ideas. She patiently described how the map would turn out using our idea, how she would recommend to do it differently, and would allow us to make the final decision.

As world-builders without cartographical experience, this was extremely helpful. It allowed us to maintain complete creative control of our world, but also drastically improved the "real-ness" of the geography. On most occasions, our map, and therefore our world, was greatly improved by her input.

In terms of aesthetics, D.N. was always on-point, and extremely detail-oriented. If something on the map didn’t match our exact aesthetic vision, no matter how small, D.N. put in the extra effort to make sure the map uniquely fit Iorden.

She even cared about the far-flung corners of the world that we had not put as much thought into. Those parts of the world that we had left vague, she filled in with exquisite, beautiful detail.

We absolutely recommend D.N. to anyone with a fantasy world!

– Christian Madera, co-creator of The Once and Future Nerd

Lost in the Fray: inspiration & spark

This post is Part 3 of a series to augment the Author's Manifesto available for free download. Start with Part 1 here.

This and other inspirations of mine are gathered in the Spark Directory for you to explore.

Find my published stories and guides in the Books Directory.

In Part 1 of this series, I began writing my first stories, and though the grip of one on one role-play never lost its hold on me, I'd added more populous games to my repertoire by the time high school ended.

A large Dragonriders of Pern game taught me that, while my writing partner was forgiving of my overindulgent character traits, the internet at large was harshly judgmental. As I joined more diverse games not limited to one fandom, I discovered that most players used characters from existing works of fiction, rather than inventing their own original characters. Dutifully, I picked up my favorite characters from published works, and I found that the payoff of writing with friends did not diminish for the changeover.

As time passed, my writing partner and I diverged somewhat, and though we still played together in these large internet games, our intensive one on one writing diminished through my college days. We collaborated in other ways, inventing new premises for larger games, and I developed my first web skills doing basic HTML coding to get our first game off the ground. It drew a decent following, most of the players making an exodus from one of our old games and into new territory with us.

Check out this Author's Manifesto for more of my inspirations!

A new player and I became fast friends, and we developed a writing rapport based on the characters we played. When I heard she was in dire straits, I helped her move in with me from halfway across the country, and our rapport intensified once we were roommates. Though not strictly faithful to the published stories, we fostered an imaginative relationship between Reno and Tifa from the Final Fantasy VII franchise. Later, we added a romance between Renji and Rukia from Bleach.

Meanwhile, I retained old maps and transcripts of the fantasy game that would become my Tales of the Known World saga. I felt driven to turn my premise into a novel, and my old writing partner granted me permission to run with my ideas. But between my college courses, online games, and full-time job, I had little time to edit the convoluted transcript. When I learned my roommate felt left out of my fantasy project, I made the easy decision to quit the novel to make more time for gaming.

Start with Portent I here.

These and other riddles in rhyme are gathered in the Portents Directory for you to explore.

While timeless keepers ruled the waves
Unjustly bred eternal slaves
And pitiless their judgment cast
As harsh on first as on the last

With Mother's mark entitled grew
At length did Mother's creed eschew
When sought they gates of time to chain
To fend their everlasting reign

But Mother's gifts will long abide
In low forgiveness long denied
By kings equality defied
Their fate to Second Gaweh tied.

This and other map commissions are gathered in my Portfolio Directory for you to explore.

This post is also Part 3 of a series about Jeffery Ingram. Start with Part 1 here.

I first met Jeffery in Part 1 of this guest series, where we connected over our love of fantasy maps. We soon collaborated on things like my interview for his podcast, a joint spin-off series about how to create your own languages, and an ongoing mastermind project to empower other worldbuilders.

Jeffery even recommended my mapping services to his fans in another of his podcast episodes! I was grateful for the shoutout. When he launched a Kickstarter to fund his first book, I wanted to contribute to his cause.

Check out this Fictional Cartography by D.N.Frost for more maps!

My friend Jeffery makes his own maps, and he has built some incredible detail into his invented fantasy world Gardul.

I contacted him and offered to donate a professional map commission for his book.

Not only was Jeffery enthused about the project, he took it one step further. He wanted a map poster in addition to the map for his book.

The enlarged size of the poster brought some new challenges for me, but I was excited about solving them to meet Jeffery's vision.

He sent me all the maps he'd made, held a phone consultation about his other needs for the map, and we were off!

Here's what he had to say about the finished maps:

Kleinpharas of Gardul, a map commission by D.N.Frost for Jeffery W Ingram www.DNFrost.com/portfolio Part 1 of a series.
I love it. They look great!

First, I love the look of the poster map. Great job with the colors as well.

I like the depth lines; I like the new font. Sweet.

I think the topography is very good.

You did a great job getting this correct.

Enlightened Entertainment: inspiration & spark

This post is part of a series to augment the Author's Manifesto available for free download.

This and other inspirations of mine are gathered in the Spark Directory for you to explore.

Find more consciousness content in my Cosmic Directory.

We have entered a new age. Our science tells us that ideas have frequencies, and we now know that energy creates the matter of our world. On the contested horizons of leading-edge science, humanity has discovered that everything is connected.

Through the mechanisms of energetic resonance, quantum particles leap into existence, and evidence is mounting that our thoughts influence how they manifest in the world. We are called as never before to lead uplifted, compassionate lives, and many of us have come together in the spirit of joyous self-discovery.

But through my own journey, I've noticed there's not much fiction out there for people like us, people who want to choose happiness over stress and positivity over negative thinking. From this new paradigm of thought, even the most brilliant TV shows and well-written films can seem hollow, disappointing, and rooted in an outdated approach to life. Since becoming an off-grid hermit isn't an option for everyone, what can the spiritually-inclined person enjoy at the end of the day?

My goal is to provide entertainment for the enlightened age. I welcome you to my Tales of the Known World saga. In this fantasy world, the magic works like the energy of thought, and spiritual principles guide the unfolding plot and characters involved.

Check out this Author's Manifesto for more of my inspirations!

These are not bland stories where everyone holds hands. My tales are gripping fantasy adventures! Through the lens of understanding, I explore the deepest flaws in our human nature, and I quest for answers about our own redemption. The story comes first, and if nothing else you will surely enjoy the epic tales I weave. But embedded in my work is a spiritual paradigm we've realized is true, though our culture is still adjusting to our new understanding that thoughts manifest reality.

I want you to enjoy your spiritual journey. If you've chosen to feel good regardless of what is staring you in the face, you should still be able to curl up with a good book or some great TV. My work as an author aims to provide the gripping adventures we all enjoy, but in a way that resonates with spiritual truths, rather than undermining them.

I invite you into my Tales of the Known World saga, so you can enjoy the benefits of an adventure woven from an uplifted perspective. The story is engaging, and the framework of the Known World will empower you to discover truths within your own heart. It has been my pleasure, honor, and privilege to create these stories for your enjoyment, and I hope my saga will spark more people to create entertainment for the enlightened age.

That's it for this post! Check out my latest inspirations for more.
