Collapse into Direction: inspiration & spark

This post is Part 4 of a series to augment the Author's Manifesto available for free download. Start with Part 1 here.

This and other inspirations of mine are gathered in the Spark Directory for you to explore.

Find my published stories and guides in the Books Directory.

In Part 1 of this series, I began writing my first stories. After joining some writing collaborations to share my tales with others, I surrendered creative autonomy to my writing partner, and unhappiness welled up in me. Storytelling, my joy and passion, now hinged on her continued interest.

When she felt ill or restless, our writing suffered. I felt adrift in creative futility with no shoreline. Remembering the quiet desperation of my ignored solo stories, I failed to work on them to fill the void. Instead, I obsessively tweaked the code for our online game, maxed out my sphere grid in Final Fantasy X, took up knitting and audiobooks - anything to burn time. I was sick, depressed, and overwhelmed by the pressures of my final college semesters.

Then my roommate and my mother staged an intervention, and my vision began to clear. The resentment from my pent-up creativity fizzled out. I realized storytelling came from within me, and I couldn't rely on anyone else for fulfillment. I saw that my gaming obsession was an addiction preventing me from writing my own stories. Squeaking through graduation, I returned home to figure myself out, and I began work on my Known World story again.

It was dreadful. As a college graduate, I read back through my high-school transcripts and cringed. There was no salvaging the ridiculous storyline; no amount of polish would eradicate the childish tone of those old drafts. But determined to close out the darkest chapter of my life, I hatched an ambitious plan. I would rewrite the entire story from start to finish and edit my new draft up to snuff.

When I wasn't at work, I drafted the first manuscript for my Tales of the Known World saga. My passion for writing flowered again, and I resigned myself to the fact that stories are best shared when finished. Determined to become my own cheerleader, I vowed to never again rely on someone else for creative fulfillment. My dreams of acclaim had to await the distant day when the book would be finished.

The Once and Future Nerd: an inspired collaboration

This post is Part 2 of a series to augment the Guest Resources available for free download. Start with Part 1 here.

This and other guest-inspired content is gathered in my Guest Directory for you to explore.

Find my personal inspirations in the Spark Directory.

In Part 1 of this series, I started on a shiny new map for The Once and Future Nerd, a phenomenal podcast by writers Zachary Glass and Christian Madera.

Their fantasy story is professionally recorded by voice actors, and it has its own original score. You can read my five-star review of their podcast here.

The podcast itself is masterful, and it plays around with fantasy tropes with the same respectful irreverence that I do in my Tales of the Known World saga. If you're looking for a great story that you'll never escape, The Once and Future Nerd is for you.

Check out these Guest Resources for more inspirational content!

Their podcast story is between books for now, but Book 2 is currently in production. In addition to the free podcast archives where you can listen to the whole story, you can now purchase Book 1 of TOAFN as a professionally-made audiobook. The audiobook comes on a USB drive shaped like an old cassette tape, and the case art includes the map I made for them!

Because I sent you, you can use the discount code iorden for a limited time. I'm not sure when the discount expires, so be sure to snag your copy today! In honor of the release, I offered fellow TOAFN fans a special discount on my own work. For a limited time, you could also get 20% off the full ebook of Awakening.

They announced the map and audiobook in a bonus episode. The majority of the episode is a cool bonus interview between Ian Harkins, the narrator of the TOAFN story, and podcast writer Christian Madera. They take a look back at the shenanigans of Book 1, and podcast co-writer Zachary Glass interrupts the interview with a few show announcements, including a nice piece about yours truly.

You can start listening to The Once and Future Nerd:
Book 1 Special Edition and Retrospective
here
.

(announcement starts at 14:14)

And be sure to subscribe to TOAFN's awesome podcast, if you haven't already!

Portent I of Broken: a riddle in rhyme

Portent I of Broken: by land asunder sundered www.DNFrost.com/prophesy #TotKW A riddle in rhyme by D.N.Frost @DNFrost13 Part of a series.
In the novel Broken, there are 24 portents fortelling the events of the unfolding saga.

These and other riddles in rhyme are gathered in the Portents Directory for you to explore.

Enjoy!

Wearied by blood and thunder
Primed by the fall and rise
Tortured by restless wonder
And taught by the long unwise

The gateway doffs her cloak of night
For master's harrowed aid
Awash in dreams of bloodied sight
And driven towards the bloody fight
Abandons the guarded shade

Broken by land asunder
Sundered by love astray
Rousing the fallen plunder
The gate makes for timeless way.

Can you decode the future Tales of the Known World?

Share your interpretation!
Comment below with your take on this portent.

Part 1 of Broken is titled "By Land", and this prophesy opens Part 1 (which you can read free here). It foretells Larin's adventure through the course of Book 2.

The prophesy's 13 lines mirror the book's 13 scenes involving Larin, and I love the poem's stumbling, broken meter. Do you know who the gateway is now?

Download the Prophesy Appendix:

The merfolk culture is built on the prophetic Gift. Nearly all men produce a portent every twenty days, and they devote their lives to interpretation. For more about the role and inner workings of prophesy, check out the Prophesy Appendix above.

Alongside every prophesy is an attribution block. This block contains a byline giving the name of the person who said the prophesy, and a dateline giving the day the prophesy was first said. Here is the attribution for this portent:
Davyi Swohka Dohari XVI
2:2:1:4/13, 1:1:2 IX
V 3:1:3:5/5, III:IX
The portent attributed here has been interpreted, and it references multiple events that culminate on an exact date. An additional verified dateline has been added to the attribution, noting the final date when the portent comes to pass.
